SM&B advise Renowned Films, a rising star in the UK television production community, on its strategic investment by US-based Critical Content

Simons Muirhead & Burton LLP (SM&B) acted for UK production company Renowned Films in an investment by US company Critical Content. The deal, led by Partner and joint head of Corporate Peter Weiss, sees the stake that was previously held by Channel 4 acquired by Critical Content in a bid for the US company to branch into UK.

Co-founded by Duane Jones, Max Welch and Tim Withers in 2012, London-based Renowned Films makes unscripted, factual entertainment, features and documentaries for TV and digital. In 2015, SM&B advised Renowned Films on their original Channel 4 Growth Fund investment, the channel having seen what an exciting prospect the company was. This allowed the company to continue its rapid progression increating innovative factual programing using bold new technologies to reach younger and diverse audiences.

Two years later, Renowned Films – now going from strength to strength – have moved to the next phase of their development and this new investment will enable further expansion into the US market. As well as taking over Channel 4’s stake in the company, Critical Content have made considerable additional investment into the business.

Peter was supported at SM&B by Blaise Gaymer, James Greenslade and Nykol O’Shea in securing the deal. From their first investment as start-ups, to their new position as international players, it has been really exciting to watch Renowned develop, and to be part of the next stage of that successful journey.
